Osprey products continue to impress me. I purchased a smaller one for my then 13 year old son and four years later, it's still going strong. This purchase of a larger black one is intended for hauling snowboarding gear and loaded with all his gear still has room to spare.

I bought this pack specifically for back-country skiing, but it works great for mountain hikes and snow shoeing as well. When one is not carrying his skis on the pack he can easily use it to carry hiking poles. The pack is very easily adjustable to ensure everything is snug and won't jostle around while you are active on the mountain. I like ice axe carriers that cover the head of the axe, while the Kode 30 leaves it out in the open, but then again, how many backpacks enable one to carry a helmet, ice axe, skis and water all at the same time? The straps are all heavy duty and will surely hold up to the wear and tear of an intense day in the back-country.

The main compartment is very deep and great for keeping extra layers, no need to cover everything in plastic bags, it all stays dry. If one is really worried about it, there is a waterproof compartment hidden on the back panel which is great for carrying camera equipment or distress transceivers to really ensure they stay dry. On the same note, the helmet on goggle compartments have soft pouches built-in for them so also keep them dry, and to keep other things around them dry when they are stored after use.

This pack is not for extended camping trips when one will need to carry lots of gear and tents etc... this pack is for an active day in the snow (or hiking) where one will finish at a cabin or lodge. I have used this pack for overnight hikes, but I always had a mountain hut in which I could sleep and eat, since I could not carry all the necessities with me.

Was so excited to get it, that I put it into use the same day I recieved it. The reviews was spot on and I couldn't agree more. Got the midium size and it fits prefect for a guy who stands at 66"in. Not into the snow, but I primarily use this backpack for traveling alot to the Caribbean where your loads are much lighter and it holds a lot more. Use the goggles compartment for my dive mask and starp my fins on the outside. The color black seems to be more of a dark gray but the sturdiness and comfort is what I wanted and I think it's a great investment for my traveling lifestyle.
